Energy-Saving Tips for Running Industrial AC Systems Year-Round

Before spending on new equipment, most facilities can capture real energy savings from how their existing AC systems are operated and maintained.

Start with filters. A clogged filter forces fans and compressors to work harder for the same output, and it's the cheapest maintenance item to stay on top of. A simple monthly inspection schedule pays for itself many times over.

Check your setpoints. Many facilities run cooling a few degrees colder than necessary simply because nobody has revisited the setpoint since installation. Even a 1-2°C adjustment across a large facility adds up to meaningful savings over a year.

Seal building envelope leaks. Gaps around doors, loading bays, and poorly sealed windows let conditioned air escape and force systems to run longer than they should. This is especially significant in facilities with frequent loading dock traffic.

Schedule condenser and coil cleaning. Dirty coils reduce heat transfer efficiency and are one of the most overlooked causes of rising energy bills in units that otherwise seem to be running fine.

Finally, consider a controls upgrade. Modern programmable controls that tie setpoints to occupancy schedules routinely deliver 10-15% savings on facilities still running on manual or fixed schedules.
